Businessman pleads not guilty to bribery charge

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A businessman pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempting to offer RM58,700 bribe to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), at the Sessions Court here on Friday.

Sikah Gelai, 57, was charged with offering the bribe to a police officer, ASP Mohd Mazlan Mohd Ariff to avoid being arrested in Kampung Triboh, Serian around 1pm on March 30, 2019.

MACC deputy public prosecutor Nur Nisla Abd Latif said the accused was initially arrested on a charge of storing unaccustomed goods and attempting to bribe an enforcement officer.

Sessions Court judge Nixon Kennedy Kulasi set bail at RM10,000 with one surety. He also fixed July 1 for case management and July 23 for further mention of the case.

The accused was charged under the MACC Act 2009. He faces an imprisonment of not more than 20 years or a fine of RM10,000 if found guilty.
