KUCHING: In conjunction with Autism Awareness Month, Autism Sarawak Muslim Group on Sunday hosted a forum for over 70 mothers of children with autism at the Sri Satok Community Based Rehabilitation Centre at Jalan Dagok here.

Held in conjunction with Brain Science Training Specialist, the event aimed to help the mothers understand autism better and learn how to deal with stress.

Among the speakers for the forum were Counsellor Veronica Peter, Ustazah Safura and the chairman of Mental Health Assoociation of Sarawak, Dr Ismail Drahman who talked about the importance of mental health.

Dr Ismail reminds mothers of autistic children to take care of their mental health.

Various activities organised for the public included charity sales, free trials of neurofeedback technology and free health screening provided by Normah Medical Specialist Centre.

There was also a community outreach programme for the special needs trainees of the centre co-hosted by volunteers from Radio Era Kuching and Limkokwing Borneo students.

The programme featured entertainment and fun games activities including a colouring session, a karaoke session and a sack race.

Sri Satok CBR Centre chairperson Kalthoum Adni was pleased with the public response to the forum.

The mothers of autistic children listen to the talk.

“This is one of the ways to enhance social cohesion and nurture a caring society,” she said, adding that it was heartening to see students taking part in community activities to raise public awareness about the special needs community.

Kalthoum also revealed that as part of its efforts to inform and educate the society about the special needs community, the centre launched its official website today.

Powered by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Neuroscience Club, the website is   developed by students from the Faculty Social Science & Humanities.
