KUCHING: The federal government needs to speed up the construction of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex at the Tapak Megah, Bukit Mabon.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs and Special Duties) Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said this is in view of the ICQS project in Nusantara, Indonesia, which is almost completed and would be inaugurated this December.

“This matter should be emphasised because it involves security issues in the border areas of Sarawak in particular and Malaysia in general,” he said.

Therefore, he said, his courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was to discuss border security issues, especially involving important assets in Sarawak.

“This visit is to explain how Sarawak can maintain security at these borders.

“Under the Hulu Rajang Parliamentary constituency, we have three dams namely Murum, Baleh, and Bakun which must be taken care of because these assets are very valuable to Sarawak which is worth a billion ringgit,” he said when met by the media at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

The Hulu Rajang MP added that he had also explained the plan he wanted to implement, which was a survey and recommendations on the issue to the Premier.

He said the absence of ICQS would affect security at the Sarawak border, especially the entry of people from Nusantara to Sarawak through Kapit.

“I hope that the Premier will consider the proposed plan even though it is not under the authority of the Sarawak government,” he explained.

He added that he also informed the matter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to speed up the construction of the ICQS.
