KATIBAS assemblyman Lidam Assan stands out as a down-to-earth person.

Judging from his music preference, one could already guess his character – simple, calm and shows a sense of humility.

He is also a hardworking man, striving to deliver the best for the people in his constituency.

In a rare insight shared with the New Sarawak Tribune, the former Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) employee provides a glimpse into what he likes and his aspirations.

New Sarawak Tribune: What inspired you to pursue a career in politics?

Lidam: I retired from PETRONAS after working for 25 years. I believe I have achieved at least part of my aspirations. Very seldom in life do we achieve all that we wanted.

Then, I was thinking how can I help others after I achieved something for myself? At the same time, I saw there are people who require some forms of assistance especially in my own village. So, I chose to help in areas such as education and career placement.

By doing so, I engaged a lot with the locals and the scope went beyond education and career.

As I became increasingly engaged, I found myself deeply entrenched in addressing various challenges faced by the locals. As a result of my involvement on the ground, people started talking about my credibility and potential as a leader, a YB (elected representative).

Probably because of this word of mouth spreading around, words of my efforts reached the ears of the leaders.

Hence, the political work started from there.

What is your satisfaction as an assemblyman and how do you balance your life and work?

Ever since working as an elected representative, what brings me satisfaction is the ability to address people’s issues even if I cannot resolve every single one of them.

What are the things that you like to do that gives impact to your constituency?

I hope to ensure there is complete accessibility by enhancing roads and other utilities within my constituency and of course to improve the people’s socio-economy.

Do you have any favourite music or films? Any hobbies?

I am a fond listener of instrumental music such as Richard Clayderman, Joe Satriani. During my free time, I love to read and do some farming.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

I will continue to work hard to address any problem and deliver positive outcomes for my constituency.

Anything more than that I leave it to our leaders, if they think I can contribute beyond my current scope.
