BINTULU: Habitat restoration is important for preserving biodiversity in Sarawak, said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi.

Majang stated that habitat restoration was in line with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

It reflects the Sarawak government’s dedication to ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management.

By implementing initiatives such as habitat restoration and tree planting, we not only revive natural ecosystems but also contribute to the social and economic well-being of communities,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the launch of the Rewilding Sarawak’s Totally Protected Areas (TPA) Through Habitat Restoration project, a collaboration between OM Materials (Sarawak) and Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) at Similajau National Park recently.

Majang, who is also Samalaju assemblyman stated that re-wilding and habitat restoration initiatives contribute actively to carbon balancing, where natural habitats serve as carbon sinks capable of sequestering and storing carbon dioxide.

“This is crucial in reducing climate change and achieving Sarawak’s sustainability goals,” he said.

Meanwhile, he emphasised the efforts of the Sarawak government to improve the living standards and income of local communities through community involvement.

He said that individuals who were previously engaged in illegal logging activities would empower and transform them into guardians of these TPAs.

He added that this approach not only supports environmental protection but also stimulates and fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility.

At the same event, Majang witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the chief executive officer of SFC, Zolkipli Mohamad Aton and the executive chairman of OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, Low Ngee Tong.

Also present was the director of OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd Mustapha Ismuni.
