KUCHING: Sarawak Energy has reduced carbon emission intensity by 73 per cent from the period of 2010 to 2021.

In stating this, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Health, Safety, Security and Environment senior vice president Marconi Madai said this is by tapping on predominantly renewable hydropower, indigenous gas, and coal resources for the security of supply and advancing research into alternative renewable energy.

“In terms of advancing the green energy agenda in the state, he said SEB has built and commissioned Southeast Asia’s first hydrogen production plant and refueling station and supported the electrification of Kuching’s transport sector by sponsoring electrical vehicle charging stations and the running of electric buses.

“In addition, to increase our renewable energy footprint, we are embarking on a 50-megawatt (MW) Batang Ai Floating Solar Farm and 60MWh Battery Energy Storage System in Sejingkat, Kuching.

“All these initiatives are to align ourselves with global initiatives such as United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No 13 Climate Action and No 15 Life on Land towards net-zero targets, and Business Ambition for 1.5 Celcius pledge,” he said.

He said this during the Sarawak-level Earth Day 2023 celebration which was officiated by Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Community Hall here yesterday.

“To reduce carbon footprint, we have implemented various initiatives to our environmental compliance and assurance of our business activities and projects such as by reducing paper usage, e-Bill Go Paperless Campaign, Go Green – Zero Polystyrene and Reduce Single-Use Plastic Campaign, Ramin Restoration and Conservation, and others,” he said.

Marconi further said SEB also grabbed the opportunity to contribute to the circular economy.

“This concept was introduced to Sarawak Energy in 2019 during Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF) 1.0 and supported by the management which eventually gave birth to circular economies related projects and initiatives, such as Asher in Murum Hydroelectric Plant (HEP), Green Algae Cultivation in Sejingkat Power Corporation and Digitalised Waste Management 3R Programme.

“This year we will establish the Circular Economy Framework which aims towards beyond compliance and address operational gaps arising through Life Cycle Analysis (LCA),” he said.

He added that as the country moves forward, it is becoming increasingly clear that people must take action to mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

“This requires a collective effort from individuals, governments, and businesses to prioritise the environment and make changes to the way we live, work, and consume,” he stressed.
