Chance for Malays, Iban and Bidayuh to study in China

KUCHING: China will give out scholarships to Bumiputera students from Sarawak to pursue tertiary students in that country.

This is in addition to the existing scholarships provided to local Chinese high school students.

Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Cheng Guangzhong said this was proof of China’s sincerity in wanting to enhance cooperation between China and Sarawak.

“These scholarships are open to all ethnic groups in Sarawak,” he said during the Chinese New Year Lunar reception here last night.

” These scholarships are open to all ethnic groups in Sarawak.”

He said apart from the Chinese community in Sarawak, Malay, Iban and Bidayuh students are welcome to pursue tertiary education in China.

“We will make continuous efforts to enhance educational cooperation and people-to-people connectivity between China and Sarawak,” he said.

He conveyed his appreciation to the Sarawak government for its efforts and remarkable achievement in promoting cooperation between China and Sarawak.

“The Governor of Sarawak (Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud) and the Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) have attached great importance to the Chinese community, uniting different ethnic groups to celebrate Chinese New Year together, which shows solidarity and ethnic harmony in Sarawak,” he said.

Cheng was happy that the state government valued Chinese education by allocating financial resources and providing land to Chinese independent schools.

“Although it has been less than a year since I came here, I am already impressed by the unique cultural diversity and ethnic harmony in Sarawak,” he said.

“I hope the Sarawak government will continue to support the Chinese community and promote cooperation with China as they have always done,” he said.
