MIRI: The smart concept digital applications adopted by Miri City should be emulated by other cities in the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said since Miri was elevated as a city 18 years ago, it has rapidly grown and transformed into a modern city.

He pointed out that the government has taken several approaches to equip Miri City with smart city application facilities and infrastructures.

“I have collaborated with Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SEDC) to equip Miri city with advanced tools so that the management of the city from the cultural perspective and its relationship with the people can be integrated through specific applications,” he said.

Abang Johari commended Miri citizens who have responded well to the transition towards smart city status.

The Premier was speaking at the closing of Miri City May Festival held at the Eastwood Golf and Country Club on Sunday.

He also commended the city council for implementing the smart safe park concept.

Under the concept, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and panic button smart poles have been installed and connected to the common centre which will be alerted during an emergency.

“I was informed your park is equipped with the latest equipment and the signal is sent to your command centre. This will facilitate immediate solution to problems in the park.

“This is a great initiative and that is why I ask other cities to emulate Miri city in term of this smart application.”

Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I (Tourism) Datuk Sebastian Ting, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala, Deputy Minister for Public Health , Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil and Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.
