KUALA LUMPUR: All para athletes who will represent the country at the 2023 Asean Para Games (APG) Cambodia have undergone classification according to class and the type of impairments before being allowed to participate in their respective events.

Malaysian Contingent Chef de Mission (CDM) to the Cambodian APG Noor Syahieda Mat Shah said the process conducted last month was very important because it would determine the qualifications of athletes who might need to change classes to avoid problems at the Games.

“This year, we made an internal classification according to the shortlisted names (for the 2023 APG Games). We asked for help from those who are qualified to check if our athletes are eligible to compete according to the categories registered last month.

“This is very important so that if anything happens in Cambodia we can solve it, however, we are confident everything will go on smoothly Insya Allah,” she told reporters when met at the National Sports Council (MSN) here yesterday.

Noor Syahieda, who was appointed as the first female CDM of APG, said she will ensure there are no hiccups so as not to disrupt the focus of the national para athletes.

The Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPM) yesterday announced that the national contingent is aiming for 33 gold, 51 silver and 58 bronze medals at the 2023 APG in Phnom Penh, Cambodia which will take place from June 3 to 9.

The national contingent will be represented by 144 athletes who will take part in 13 of the 14 sports contested in Cambodia including e-sports being featured as a demo sport. – BERNAMA-dpa
