SIMANGGANG: Cases of drug abuse do not only occur in cities or urban centres, but are increasingly spreading widely in rural areas.

Deputy Community Welfare Minister Mohammad Razi Sitam expressed concern when many other crimes such as thefts are linked to addicts who lack money to get supplies.

“There are even those who are willing to kill themselves, threaten the safety of family members and set fire to homes because of desperation due to addiction.

“So, I see prevention efforts should start from the bottom in every village or longhouse in Sarawak.

“And, the role and cooperation of community leaders and tribal leaders (KMKK) as grassroots leaders in combating the crime of drug abuse is very important. Carry out your responsibilities as best you can,” he said.

Razi who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Social Development Council (MPS) said this while officiating at the dinner and appreciation ceremony in conjunction with the Betong District Bureau of Drug and Substance Issues (MIDS) Strengthening Workshop at a leading hotel here, on Saturday night.

He explained that the security of the areas under the respective KMKK administration through the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), is important to be given attention.

“And implement drug prevention programmes in the community in villages and longhouses.

“At the same time, KMKK should cooperate with enforcement agencies such as members of the One Stop Committee (OSC) established by the Sarawak government.

“The establishment of the committee involved clearly shows the concern of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who is committed to improving to create well-being in the community,” he said.

OSC MIDS under MPS, Razi said again, is complementary to the role played by KMKK together with government agencies in each district such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) to combat abuse drugs and recovering addicts.

“That’s why I believe the establishment of OSC MIDS and MPS, is very appropriate and is a noble effort to create well-being in the community that should involve all members,” he added.

This year it is understood that 12 programmes were successfully carried out.

Razi contributed RM10,000 to OSC MIDS Betong District to motivate the members’ enthusiasm and commitment, thus becoming a sign of his support to strengthen the committee.

Betong District Officer and Chairman of OSC MIDS Committee of Betong District Alfred Geling Ason was also present.
