KUCHING: Homestay entrepreneurs are urged to contact the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Sarawak or the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia (Motac) for incentives offered by the ministries.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah made the call at a press conference after the launch of the Sia Sitok Sarawak Campaign 2020 at Imperial Hotel on Monday (Aug 17).

“They can come and share with us at the ministry and from there, we can work together so that they can also move forward.

“At the moment, there are many people who are interested in starting their own homestay business   because there is a potential in this industry,” he said.

The minister pointed out that, for instance, if there was a promotion at the homestay in Telok Melano, Lundu, many people would want to take the opportunity to visit the place.

“Therefore, we do encourage the opening of homestay business because we know the big hotels will not open their branches in the interior areas,” he said.

Abdul Karim added homestays would also provide economic and business opportunities to the rural folk.

For the record, the homestay industry in Sarawak recorded a collection of RM3.63 million in rental revenue from Jan to Sept 2019.
