KUCHING: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized contraband worth a total of RM21,730,882 in the period between last January and September 4.

This was revealed by the commanding officer SAC Datuk Khaw Kok Chin during a press conference at GOF’s local base yesterday.

He said 91 operations were carried out including ‘Ops Awas’, ‘Ops Batas’ and ‘Ops Libas’ against smugglers of cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, timber logs and wildlife items. During these operations, 72 locals and 232 foreigners were arrested.

Khaw also revealed that during ‘Ops Libas’ held at 6.30am yesterday, a team raided a house at Pending Heights and seized 40 boxes containing 2,090 cartons of smuggled cigarettes valued at RM411,200.

He said they also seized an Axia car for investigation, but no one was arrested.

The case was handled under Section 135(1) of the Custom Act 1967.
