Cooperatives urged to go digital

KUCHING: Cooperative societies have been urged to explore digital methods of advertising and promoting their products and services.

Cooperative Commission of Malaysia (SKM) executive vice president (Policy and Development) Amran Abdul Kadir said by adopting digital method of doing things, it will help the cooperative community to realise the importance of shifting from traditional to modern methods.

Citing the ‘dari kampung ke alam maya’ (from village to virtual world) tagline, he said it signifies that the cooperative products, originally from the village have now gone global.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic had also served as a blessing in disguise for the cooperatives as buyers could buy their desired products at their fingertips.

“It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that we realised the importance of doing business online and the importance of the cooperative movement to explore and practise the digital method in promoting our cooperative products and services,” he said.

Amran said this when officiating at the closing of Sarawak Cooperatives Digitalisation Seminar held at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre here, today (June 20).

He said through the seminar, SKM aimed to raise awareness in adapting to digital business methods.

“We want cooperatives to take the opportunity to popularise cooperative products and make them known to the public on social media platforms such as Facebook and others, as well as on e-commerce platforms like Shopee and Lazada.

“To achieve this, we have launched various digital-based promotional plans to ensure that the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) increases, which is currently showing growth after COVID-19, especially in online sales,” he added.

A total of 100 participants attended the two-day seminar which started on June 19 and involved presenters from the Malaysian Cooperative Institute (IKMa), Malaysia Network Information Centre (MYNIC), MyMall Malaysia, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Agrobazaar Online, Entrepreneur Millennium Cooperative Berhad, and Tanjong Keramat Malaysia Cooperative Berhad.
