KUCHING : Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd recently hosted a group of councillors and officers from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to a familiarisation visit at the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP).
One of the core components of Sarawak’s Integrated Solid Waste Management System, KIWMP was constructed according to the highest international standards and sits on 112 hectares of ideal geographical and geological landscape in Mambong, approximately 27 kilometres away from Kuching City.
Besides a tour of the facility, the group was also briefed about KIWMP’s recent developments, particularly concerning the operations of its sanitary landfill.
A highly controlled site for the disposal of non-hazardous waste, the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) categorised Level 4 sanitary landfill receives approximately 513 tonnes of municipal waste a day from several of the city’s municipalities, namely – Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) as well as some areas under the Serian District Council (SDC).
The Park also receives, treats and disposes of hazardous waste from all over East Malaysia and has four main components; a sanitary landfill (for municipal waste), a secure landfill (for hazardous waste), a leachate wastewater treatment plant, and a hazardous waste incineration facility for the thermal treatment and disposal of scheduled hazardous waste in all forms, including clinical waste.
These units are fully licensed by the Department of Environment (DoE), as is the Stabilization Plant (for the pre-treatment of scheduled waste destined for the secure landfill).
Hosting the group were Trienekens Chief Operating Officer Alice Lee and other senior staff.
