KUCHING: Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is hoping Sarawak and Sabah will be given consideration under the RM127m budget allocation to support the creative, arts and cultural industries.

State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said the creative industry comes under many agencies, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as well as tourism.

But he pointed out that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture is under Sarawakian minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

“I hope Datuk Seri Tiong will have that in mind since he is from Sarawak,” he told a press conference after attending an inaugural townhall session with the creative industry hosted by Hock Seng Lee at HSL Tower on Saturday (Feb 25).

He was responding to a question on whether Sarawak would seek a portion of the funding allocated to grow the local creative industry.

Abdul Karim said the allocation normally goes to the ministry involved.

“It is for the industry players to go to that ministry and seek the funds. The ministry in Sarawak does not go over and ask.

“But during our meetings with the ministers involved, of course we will ask them to support certain infrastructure related to the industry in the state,” he added.

Also present during the event were Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan and the ministry’s permanent secretary Datuk Sherrina Hussaini.
