Crucial to maintain integrity in leadership

KUCHING: Community leaders have been urged to maintain a high level of integrity in leadership.

Deputy Minister of Transport (Aviation and Roads) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said leaders must have strong moral principles, adhere to their words, always do what is right, and follow ethical standards.

“We all must be role models to our descendants and society in general,” he said.

He said during the Integrity Tour Series 6/2023 held at Fairyland Restaurant in Siburan near here on yesterday (April 5).

Dr Jerip, who is also the Mambong assemblyman also urged community leaders to monitor all activities and projects to ensure that all development activities or projects carried out in their area run smoothly, without problems, and benefit the people.

He encouraged them to report any cases of slow or non-compliant project implementation to the relevant agencies.

Dr Jerip also stressed the importance of communication and interaction with the people and the need for leaders in all sectors to be responsible, accountable, and transparent in carrying out their sectors.

“Communicate effectively with the people, listen to their needs, and work towards fulfilling them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Sarawak (Integrity and Ombudsman), Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya emphasised the Sarawak government’s commitment to cultivating integrity practices across all levels of society.

He stressed the importance of public servants practicing excellent work culture with strong moral and ethical values to achieve Sarawak’s vision of an advanced state with high integrity citizens.

“I also urge everyone to become ambassadors of integrity in society and help create a vision for a progressive and highly integrated Sarawak,” he said.

Juanda also outlined his responsibility for ensuring the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean administration, free from corruption, and providing the best service to the people.

“In general, each individual has a duty and responsibility to develop the country and the state as a whole through integrity and good governance. This pure duty is our shared responsibility.

“The process of cultivating integrity and good governance requires continuous effort and will take a long time,” he said.

He added he would continue to strengthen efforts to disseminate the value of integrity among the community, and this effort has shown a positive response.

Earlier, the event was attended by various community leaders and government officials.

It was organised by the Sarawak Integrity and Ombudsman Unit (UNIONS), which featured two lectures, with the first one delivered by the Sarawak Department of Social Welfare on integrity in social welfare management, while the second lecture was on integrity and anti-corruption presented by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak.
