CSR plays crucial role in community development

SIBU: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is crucial to enhancing society, especially in the context of community development, said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

According to him, it mandates that businesses support community development in order to stabilise the current economy.

“Next in the social context, when conflicts arise in society, CSR can help create a harmonious environment through campaigns or activities carried out,” he added.

In his speech at the conclusion of the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) – Ministry of Higher Education Crisis Programme of the Unimas Prosperous Community at SK Sentosa Hall, Kampung Usahajaya here, on Saturday, he said from a political perspective, CSR helps a lot to create an ethical system or working order.

“CSR also emphasises the environment and contributes to the preservation of the universe.”

According to him, the establishment of a CSR programme like this demonstrates Unimas’ interest in initiatives to aid and lessen the burden of communities in need.

“We’re hoping that by making this effort, we will offer the people of Kampung Usahajaya a sense of purpose.

“I am also very confident that this kind of CSR programme is able to establish close relationships with various parties,” he added.

Also present were the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Unimas Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, Head of Kampung Usahajaya Mohd Ali Serani, Headmaster of SK Sentosa Admah Mohamed Jamil and other invited guests.

Various activities were also carried out including free health checks, motivational talks and handing over of food baskets to the needy.
