MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) engineering students had the invaluable opportunity to witness first-hand the real-world applications of the theoretical knowledge acquired in their coursework.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering and Science recently provided its students with practical insights into low and medium voltage electrical applications by organising a site visit to the Electrical Division of Wehaya Sdn Bhd.

Organised in collaboration with the engineers at Wehaya Sdn Bhd, a leading provider of electrical solutions in the region, the students had the privilege of observing and engaging with professionals as they demonstrated various low- and medium-voltage electrical applications.

From distribution transformers to switchgears and protection systems, the students gained insights into the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems crucial for various industries.

The students and their accompanying lecturers were welcomed by Wehaya’s electrical department head Khatini Jerai and senior engineer Muhammad Fakhrul Medhi.

This was followed by a briefing on the company’s operations and services to a wide range of clientele in the oil and gas industry since 1990 by operations engineer Julia Jonathan.

The students observed various types of electrical equipment and motors.

To showcase maintenance works, Wehaya Sdn Bhd workers demonstrated health screening on a motor to determine what maintenance works had to be done, followed by the dismantling and servicing of the motor.

Student Mohd Haziq Mohd Daud said he was fascinated by the various industrial-scale electrical equipment, and the work that goes into screening and maintenance at Wehaya Sdn Bhd’s electrical division.

Fellow student Yap Zhi Shuan, meanwhile, said he was glad for the opportunity to learn more about the workflow for troubleshooting and employers’ expectations of graduate students entering the oil and gas industry.

Lecturer of electrical and computer engineering Dr Chew Ing Ming, who accompanied the students on the visit, said the initiative aligns with Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to providing its students with holistic learning experiences that extend beyond the confines of the classroom.

By exposing students to industry practices and technologies, the Department of

Electrical and Computer Engineering aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application, thereby preparing students for successful careers in the field of electrical engineering.

Said another accompanying lecturer, Dr. Salem Mgammal Awadh Nasser Al-Ameri: “We are thrilled to offer our students the opportunity to visit Wehaya Sdn Bhd and witness first-hand the practical applications of what they have learned in their courses.

“We believe that experiences like these are essential in preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities they will encounter in their future careers.”
