SIBU: Starting a business requires courage and strong determination because it is not a path that ordinary people are willing to tread.

In stating this, Deputy Minister for Housing, Public Health and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said after all, there are only two outcomes – success or failure.

“Without sufficient connections and resources, it can be a daunting challenge, full of obstacles. On the other hand, with confidence, determination, and riding the wave of the times, along with the guidance of mentors, you can avoid unnecessary pitfalls.

“These are the qualities that successful entrepreneurs should possess,” he said at an event themed “Creating Successful Businesses, the Ultimate Secrets to Success”, held here on Sunday evening (Oct 22).

Tiang was represented by Kapitan So Teck Kee, who delivered his speech.

The event, organised by Ah Girl Beauty & Academy of Kuching, was attended by 14 participants from Kuching and Sibu.

The Pelawan assemblyman said the theme for the event is very fitting and timely, especially in this rapidly changing era where everyone is pursuing a dream – to start their own businesses, become their own bosses, and create successful enterprises that make them well-known success stories.

Certainly, he said, in the early stages of entrepreneurship, things would not always go smoothly, and cannot expect to turn a profit in a short time.

Success doesn’t come without challenges – undergoing numerous trials and tribulations, he said, adding that there are no shortcuts to success; it’s about taking one step at a time, learning from mistakes, and understanding the hardships of the entrepreneurial journey – that’s life.

“While running your businesses, I hope that every entrepreneur can conduct their business with integrity and fairness, always being honest and not compromising long-term benefits for short-term gains. ‘Fishing for the big fish’ requires patience, and occasionally taking a loss may lead to unexpected rewards.

“I hope that while achieving success, you won’t forget the marginalised and vulnerable in society. Practice corporate social responsibility (CSR) and give back to society.

“Finding a balance between your business and charitable efforts is something I believe everyone here is capable of, considering the hard work you’ve all put in,” Tiang added. Also present was director of Ah Girl Beauty & Academy of Kuching, Yong Hui Nee.
