MIRI: In a heartfelt gesture recognizing the dedication and professionalism of journalists in Miri, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (Tourism) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew gave them a pat on the back.

Speaking at the Northern Sarawak Journalist Association (NSJA) Children Education incentive awards last night (Apr 29), he expressed gratitude for the longstanding relationship between politicians and the media, dating back to his days in the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) in 1989.

With over 37 years of close collaboration between politicians and journalists, Ting stressed the importance of working together to develop Miri and communicate effectively with the public.

“In Sarawak, particularly Miri, we are blessed as you all are very much professional… thank you for all the wonderful years,” he said.

Despite technological advancements, he noted that traditional media such as newspapers and radio remain relevant, especially in rural areas where access to information is limited.

Highlighting the significance of responsible reporting in maintaining racial harmony, the deputy minister stressed the need to avoid sensationalism that could potentially damage the delicate fabric of social cohesion in Sarawak.

He reiterated Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari Tun Openg’s emphasis on fostering harmony among diverse communities in the region.

A total of 21 NSJA members’ children received the incentives.

The event has been supported by Ting for the past eight years.

Also present were Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, NSJA president Chai Chon Chin and the association’s  treasurer Andy Jong.
