KUCHING: The dilapidated school project involving 116 schools in Sarawak should be undertaken by the State’s Public Works Department (JKR) to ensure project completion, said Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

He explained that the projects undertaken by state’s JKR have been carried out smoothly and some were completed ahead of schedule with extra resources allocated.

“But, the projects under the Education Ministry have been delayed and the same thing has happened in Sabah.

“I have suggested that the dilapidated school project to be handled by state JKR and with the technical expertise that they have, it will ensure the completion of the projects under the allocated budget and schedule,” said Azmin during a press conference after a courtesy call on Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

He also welcomed the state government’s offer in helping to develop schools in the state through a joint-committee to monitor state-federal developments.

“I also welcome the Sarawak government’s offer on helping to develop the schools in the state by forming a joint-committee to monitor the development between the state and federal government so that the projects will be completed accordingly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Azmin pointed out that the issue raised by Sibuti Member of Parliament Lukanisman Awang Sauni during the previous parliamentary session will be explained to the Chief Minister and that Petronas will provide additional information to be further discussed.

“We also welcome the decision by Sarawak to form a special committee, and that is also in line with the decision from the federal government to ensure that Sarawak and Sabah are well represented in this committee to review and discuss the implementation of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he said.
Azmin also disclosed that the federal government has agreed to continue the Pan Borneo Highway project.

“The project would benefit both Sarawak and Sabah as well as provide job opportunities to the locals,” he said.
