KUCHING: The Utilities and Telecommunication Ministry is determined to implement and enforce the provisions of the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016 to ensure the rakyat (people) have safe, reliable and quality gas supply services.
In accordance with this, its minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi disclosed that the ministry managed to obtain approval for four new gas regulations.
“These regulations consist of strict compliance to the gas technical and safety standards, and only allow competent persons to carry out gas installations throughout Sarawak.
“This will in turn protect our rakyat from dangers arising from the distribution and use of gas supply.
“Having said that, I would like to urge everyone to work together to ensure that our gas distribution practice adheres to the highest technical and safety standards,” he said during the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication’s gathering at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Friday.
Julaihi also called on those interested in gas distribution businesses to attend certified gas competency courses, apply for gas distribution licences from his ministry and participate in the gas distribution activities.
“As announced recently, the state government plans to expand the coverage of gas distribution across Sarawak using virtual and physical pipeline systems which will increase domestic gas consumption, boost Sarawak’s economic activities, create new job opportunities and thereby, improve the socio-economic development of our rakyat.
“Hence, towards realising the aspiration to be a developed state by 2030, I would like to urge all of us and all the agencies under the ministry to work closely together to provide resilient, effective and efficient utility services throughout the state,” he said.
