KUCHING: After a long wait, Zamhari Leik finally has a house to call his own in Kampung Segedup here.

The 61-year-old’s house had previously perished in a fire, leaving him homeless and without any possessions.

The one bedroom-one bathroom house costing RM30,000 was constructed by the state government under Program Pembaikan Rumah Miskin Rakyat Sarawak (PPRMS) through the Satok constituency service centre and Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency service centre funding.

The divorcee was very emotional when receiving the keys to his new home during the handover ceremony officiated by Petra Jaya incumbent Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki on yesterday (Nov 13).

“I cannot express how grateful I am for this new house,” he said.

According to his older sister Selmah, he was very emotionally distraught after the fire.

She said he stayed with her and other relatives while waiting for his house to be built.

“We were very worried about him because he became emotionally unstable and traumatised after the incident.

“He previously worked as a security guard, but the incident really shook him and he was unable to keep his job,” she said.

The 70-year-old expressed her appreciation to the state government for the assistance to Zamhari.

She said it comes as a great relief that Zamhari finally has a roof over his head.

“Zamhari is a divorcee, all six of his children have families of their own, so he is living alone.

“I am grateful that his house is completed. It is near my house so I can still check on him to make sure he is all right,” she added.
