KOTA SAMARAHAN:  The Sarawak Zone Ministry of Health Training Institution (Mohti) graduates have been urged to have an open mind when given placements to serve.

“Do not choose a place that is close to home only. It must be remembered that when we serve the public sector, we also serve the country and community.

“It is important for graduates who are in the health service to ensure that the education received at Mohti can be translated well in line with MOH with a first-class mindset,” said MOH (management) deputy secretary-general Datuk Mohd Shafiq Abdullah.

He was speaking at the convocation ceremony of the Sarawak Zone Ministry of Health Training Institution at DeTAR Putra, University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here yesterday.

Mohd Shafiq also advised MOH staff to be disciplined from the early stages of their service.

He pointed out there were staff who had disciplinary problems to the point of dismissal.

“Every day, we see that there are complaints in the country’s newspapers about the services we provide.

“There are those who report delays in treating and registering patients, we need to review this again whether it stems from us or other constraints related to technology budgets and so on,” he said.

“Every year, MOH spends a total of RM29 billion and 63 per cent of this total, amounting to RM17.6 billion, is used to pay salaries to 270,000 positions including nurses, medical assistants, pharmacy assistants and more.

“I hope that when we grant the status of permanent positions to these graduates, they can provide the best service so that we will be appreciated by the community. Can I get that commitment?” he asked the graduates yesterday.

Also present were MOH training management division secretary Dr Zainal Abidin Sait, Health Department Sarawak director Dr Jamilah Hashim, and MOHTI Kuching director Hawa Ragi.
