KUCHING: Police here managed to arrest two locals for allegedly stealing cables after a video of them riding a motorcycle went viral on social media earlier this week.

On Monday (Sept 5), the police took note of a 24-second viral video on Facebook showing two men riding a blue motorcycle and believed to be carrying stolen cables at a location said to be at a traffic light intersection near Penview Hotel.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah confirmed that they had received a police report from Telekom Malaysia Berhad pertaining to a cable theft incident near Jalan Keranji.

“Following the report, we managed to arrest the male suspects aged 18 and 26, around 9pm.

“Background checks found that the suspects each has 12 prior cases related to drugs, property crime and cable theft,” he said.

An investigation paper has been opened under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft where, the suspects can be sentenced to a jail term up to seven years or a fine, upon conviction.

Ahsmon said the police welcome any public information related to activities involving cable theft by contacting the Kuching police control centre at 082-244444 or channelling them at the nearest police station.
