SIBU: A local university student lost RM15,216 after being duped into a non-existent job via social media recently.

Sibu OCPD ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said they received a police report from the 21-year-old victim pertaining to the case yesterday.

The incident happened when the victim came across a “part-time online assistant” job hiring on Instagram and contacted a female over the phone.

“The job required the victim to purchase items such as watches and air conditioners online from the agent and then resell the items to consumers.

“For each sale that the victim made, he will get a 0.6 per cent commission as promised.

“As instructed, the victim made seven payment transactions amounting to RM15,612 for the purchase of goods to three bank accounts,” he said.

However, the student realised that he had been conned after the suspect instructed him to make more purchases and payments.

Zulkipli reminded the public to not be easily fooled by any online job offering that promises promising a luxurious refund or commission.
