SIBU: The Durin cultural carnival, Karnival Kebudayaan Durin (KKD), this year achieved its goal, with more than 4,000 visitors attending the three-day carnival each day, said Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.

The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman said KKD, which ran from April 26 to 28, managed to attract a significant number of visitors nightly with its interesting programmes.

“We are proud to announce that we’ve met the council’s targets. Our aim was to establish this carnival as a platform to boost the local economy in Durin through the stalls,” he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of KKD last night (Apr 28).

Beyond its organisational success and visitor turnout, Sempurai stressed the carnival’s role in fostering unity among the local community, transcending ethnic and cultural boundaries.

“The true triumph of the KKD 2024 lies in its ability to unite people from diverse backgrounds in a peaceful and joyous celebration,” he added.

Sempurai thanked the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Sarawak and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia for their financial support, acknowledging the collaborative effort of all involved parties in making the carnival a resounding success.

The KKD featured diverse activities such as remote-control boat competitions, sepak takraw matches, Iban karaoke song contests, a Chinese cultural stage, blowpipe competitions, duck-catching contests, ngajat performances, and mini regattas.
