KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry is conducting an in-depth study on the teaching of science and mathematics in English, covering the aspects of acceptance, readiness, mechanisms and strategies, said Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.

He said the study also covers obtaining the views of the people.

“The Education Ministry is committed to improving the fluency of our children in science and mathematics so as to shape a future-proof generation. I wish to emphasise that all decisions to be made will be based on the needs and interests of all Malaysian children,” he said in a statement today.

Maszlee’s statement comes a day after Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told the Dewan Rakyat that the government is making an in-depth study of a new system of teaching science and mathematics in English, with the lessons recorded by the best teachers replicated in every school through information technology.

The policy on the teaching and learning of science and mathematics in English, which was introduced in 2003, was replaced with the policy on ‘Enhancing Bahasa Malaysia, Strengthening the English Language’ in stages from 2010. – Bernama
