Showing disrespect to Negaraku

KUCHING: Several members of Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S), a pressure group, have landed themselves in trouble with the law for showing disrespect to the national anthem.

Police here called them up to record their statements for not standing for the Negaraku during a fundraising dinner organised by Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) on Sept 27.

A video recording of the eight members, including a woman, was circulated online showing them remaining seated as other guests stood up for the national anthem.

Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Dev Kumar said police are investigating under Section 8(3) of the National Anthem Act 1968 after they received a report yesterday.

Under Section 8 (3) of the National Anthem Act 1968, “any person who knowingly shows disrespect towards the National Anthem in any public place, shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding one hundred ringgit or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one month.”

S4S spokesman Shaow Tung Leong, who is also known as Alex Leong, later told journalists that it was an act of “silent protest” against Pakatan Harapan unkept promises to Sarawak.

He said Malaya had not been “fair” to Sarawak and Sarawakians.
