BINTULU: Eight crew members of the Azlina Bos vessel were rescued after it sank approximately nine nautical miles northwest of Kuala Kemena last Wednesday.

According to director of the Bintulu Maritime Zone Captain Mohd Iszuadi Muhamad Hassan the vessel was found partially submerged with eight crewmen, all Indonesians aged between 31 and 48.

“The distress call was received during a routine patrol by the maritime asset BOT KILAT 44 at around 11.56 am. The vessel reported its emergency situation via very high frequency (VHF) radio.

“BOT KILAT 44 promptly alerted the Operations Centre (PUSOP) of the Bintulu Maritime Zone and informed the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) in Kuching before rushing to provide assistance,” he said.

The vessel’s skipper arranged for the Kuda Laut 1 vessel to rescue the crew members. All personnel were safely evacuated at around 12.30 pm.

“Despite efforts, the vessel ultimately sank approximately an hour later. Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing, with vessel agents ready to assist the victims,” he added.
