KUCHING: The public should prioritise safety and avoid falling victim of criminals during the coming Hari Raya festive season.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri gave this reminder following several cases of robbery in the past few weeks, which occurred in several districts, especially in the city and Padawan.

He said the suspects were two or three motorcyclists dressed in dark clothes and with full-face helmets.

“These criminals are targeting individuals who are walking alone in dark and quiet spots, as well as targeting shops that operate 24 hours such as coffee shops and isolated convenience stores.

“I advise those celebrating Hari Raya this week to stay alert to suspicious people around us when shopping,” he told a press conference this morning.

Azman advised the people to avoid walking alone in quiet and dark places and avoid keeping handbags in the motorcycle basket to avoid becoming victims of snatch thefts.

The public should also be cautious when withdrawing money from banks, especially ATMs.

“When in public, do not show off any jewellery and valuables so as not to be the next target for snatchers and thieves.

“Business premises owners should install security cameras to assist the police in conducting investigations.

“When refuelling at the petrol station, owners must make sure the car door is closed and locked,” he said.

And a final advice from Sarawak’s top cop: “Immediately report or contact the nearest police stations regarding theft or robbery incidents.”
