KUCHING: The Sarawak Electrical Industry Training Institute (Seiti), a subsidiary company of Pusat Pembangunan Kemahiran Sarawak (PPKS), is accepting applications from working adults and secondary school leavers for its August 2019 intake.

Commenting on the upcoming intake, Seiti acting general manager Endra Mulia Askor said that the institute is accredited by the Electrical Inspectorate Unit (EIU) under the Utilities Ministry as a training and examination centre.

The institute offers the following Certificates of Competency, namely Wireman Second Grade (Low Voltage Single Phase Installations), Wireman First Grade (Low Voltage Three Phase Installations and Single Phase Installations) and Chargeman L1 (Low Voltage Main Switchboard and Auxiliaries).

“We are working closely with various stakeholders, especially the government and industry, to close the competency gap by producing competent wiremen and chargemen to support the state’s development initiatives,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

He added that the state ministry has set a target for Sarawak to have 15,000 competent electrical workforces, such as chargemen, wiremen and cable jointers.

“Based on statistics from the EIU, as of August 2018, the state had 6,991 ‘competent electrical persons’ against the target of 10,788 (for 2018). Coupled with our state’s target to achieve full electrification by 2025, trainees who embark on wireman and chargeman courses can look forward to exciting careers,” he said.

At Seiti, the wireman and chargeman programmes are offered on a part-time basis to enable working adults and secondary school leavers to enjoy the best of both where they can work and study at the same time.
