KUCHING: Giving equal time for all races to celebrate their festivities such as Hari Raya, Christmas, Gawai and Chinese New Year reflects a fair and just government, pointed out Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing.

Having extra public holidays for major cultural and religious activities is also a reflection of a multi religious and cultural state.

“It also shows the government’s sensitivity to the needs of its people.

“It is this sort of consideration that allows Sarawak to have religious harmony over the years,” he said.

He said all work with no sense of human needs is not good for the community.

“Human beings are only productive if we allow them to be happy and contented. As a saying goes, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy,” he pointed out.

Last Saturday, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said if there is space, he will give an extra holiday for Christmas.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal had announced Dec 24 and Dec 25 as public holidays in Sabah.

Meanwhile, Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said Christians in Sarawak are also hoping to get an extra public holiday on Christmas eve.
