KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today witnessed the handover of three units of hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai cars to his deputy premiers.

The vehicles were donated by SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd.

The presentation of the vehicles to Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hiang signifies a key milestone for Sarawak in pursuing green mobility and green energy Initiatives.

Met by reporters, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Husain said there are only five allocations for Toyota Mirai for the whole country.

“Actually, they were for the federal government, but since there is no hydrogen station in West Malaysia and only Sarawak has it, all five cars were given to Sarawak.

“So next year, if we have another allocation, we will hand it over to other ministers. These five cars are for our premier, the three deputy premiers and SEDC.

SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd in a press release said the presence of the Toyota Mirai in the Sarawak government fleet, goes hand-in-hand with the aspirations of the government to become the nation’s leader in green energy.

“The vehicles provide an avenue for the government to evaluate and develop long-term sustainable solutions for the greenification of the existing government fleets, and provide opportunities to further study the potential of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) technology for the expansion of low-carbon economy which prioritises compact size, efficiency and productivity to support current mobility needs.
