SIBU: A huge green arch decorated with a combination of two festive seasons design has been erected at Door 2 of the iconic Sibu Central Market.

It was mulled to usher the double celebrations, Hari Raya and Hari Gawai Dayak 2023.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) market and petty traders standing committee chairman, councillor Albert Tiang, said the arch was aimed to promote the festive season at the market.

“By doing this, we can bring the festive mood to the market, otherwise market seems very quiet.

“We want to bring the festive season to the market and also to wish our Muslim friends and our Iban Dayak friends, ‘Selamat Hari Raya’ and ‘Selamat Hari Gawai,” he said when met by reporters after the launching of the arch today (March 30).

Tiang said that the arch, which was also aimed to spruce up the festive mood with a total cost of RM3,000, was sponsored by the Sibu Central Market Hawker Association.

Meanwhile, SMC deputy chairman Bujang Abdul Majid said similar to Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations which were celebrated early this year, the arch was a combination of two festive seasons.

“As the duration between two festive seasons is close, hence, we combine those two in one arch. So, we (with the arch) make this place more harmonious.

“Every celebration, we celebrate it together. We understand each other’s festive season. We also appreciate the patronage made of all communities in Sarawak,” he said.
