SIBU: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has reported a decrease in emergency calls related to fire incidents.
According to Bomba Sarawak director Datuk Khiruddin Drahman, only 30 per cent of the emergency calls received were related to fire cases.
He said the remaining 70 per cent involved rescue cases and various other emergencies, without disclosing the exact figures for the cases or emergency calls.
“This is a positive phenomenon, as the emergency calls on fire cases are decreasing, and our concern now is fatal accidents,” he told a press conference after the Auxiliary Bomba officer commissioning ceremony at Sibujaya fire station here today.
He said the decrease in the number of emergency calls related to fires demonstrates the effectiveness of Bomba’s collaborative programmes with local agencies.
Although the number of fire cases showed positive development, Khiruddin stressed that the public should not become complacent, but instead should remain alert.
“The percentage of property loss by fire victims is decreasing. Last year, we recorded less than 10 per cent in terms of property loss, whereas in the past, it was typically around 18 per cent.
“In 2021, during the movement control order (MCO), we recorded 8 per cent. However, when the public becomes complacent, it can rise to 18 per cent,” he added.
He stressed the significance of community advocacy and the media’s role in raising awareness among the public.
