SIBU: A late night blaze destroyed stacks of used tyres and a heap of processed wood at a lumber mill along Jalan Ting Sing Hilir, Sungai Bidut here, last night (Apr 29).

Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Andy Alie said firefighters from Sungai Merah and Sibu stations were dispatched to the scene, about 18km away, after receiving a distress call at 9.08 pm.

Upon arrival, they saw the burning tyre piles inside and outside of the mill, and the fire also spread to a heap of processed wood near the burning tyre pile.

The team focused their extinguishing efforts with water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant, controlling the flames from spreading to the mill’s structure before tackling the burning tyre and wood piles.

By 9.57 pm, the fire was brought under control, despite causing about nine per cent damages to the mill.

The team ended their operation at 11.50 pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
