MIRI: A family of six was made homeless after their double-storey house at Lorong Piasau Utara here was destroyed in a fire early yesterday.

The incident occurred around 4.00am while the victims were asleep.

According to one of the victims, Sin Swee Hong, 38, he was woken up by the shouting of his brother before he realised that their house was on fire.

“We tried to douse the fire using water but to no avail as it spread quickly to other sections of the house,” he said when met at the scene.

Sin added that none of them managed to salvage their belongings in the incident.

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department Zone 6 chief, Law Poh Kiong said about 90 per cent of the wooden structure was destroyed.

“18 firefighters with two fire engines, a water tanker and EMRS vehicle from Lopeng and Miri fire stations were mobilised to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 4.03am,” he said.

He said the fire was brought under control in 15 minutes and the operation ended at 5.56am.

“No human casualties were reported and the total loss and cause of the fire are still under investigation,” he said.
