KUCHING: The Hari Gawai fire safety campaign by the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba Sarawak) aims to raise awareness on the importance of fire safety precautionary measures during festive seasons.

Bomba Sarawak director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said it is important for the people to be aware of the 3L syndrome – ‘Lupa, Leka dan Lalai’ or ‘forgetfulness, carelessness, and negligence’ to prevent untoward incidents.

“During the festive season, everyone would be busy in the kitchen preparing meals, so it is important to highlight the 3L syndrome. They must be alert to the cooking and electrical appliances that are being used.

“Bomba Sarawak always encourages and reminds the people of the 3P approach namely precaution, prevention and protection. This approach goes a long way in ensuring the safety of the people and their property,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the launching of fire safety campaign in conjunction with Hari Gawai celebration and pre-launching of the charity Malaysia Day Community Fun Run at Farley Mall today.

On fire safety, Khirudin stressed that prevention is always the best approach as “fire does not choose its victim nor does it take a holiday”.

He warned that fire can spread within minutes while smoke often kills within seconds.

“This is why we always remind the people to take fire seriously, they must know their escape plan and focus on fire prevention because fire kills.

“The first five minutes of a fire is crucial because it determines whether you can control and fight the fire or it escalates into a disaster and later catastrophic,” he said.
