First Perkim branch to have own building

SIBU: Education and Technological Research Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee yesterday officiated at the soft opening of the new Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (Perkim) Sibu branch building at Bandong Road here.

The ground breaking ceremony of the new RM400,000 building project was held in November 2017.

The fund for the construction of the two-storey building came from the Rural Transformation Programme.

With the completion of the building, Perkim Sibu branch is the first Perkim branch to have its own building in Sarawak.

The opening ceremony yesterday was attended by about 50 members of Perkim Sibu who were excited by the beauty of the new building.

Perkim Sibu branch chairperson Datin Sharifah Zaidah Syed Abdul Aziz said Perkim Sibu branch was established in 1989 and that it was first housed at the residence of former Pemanca of Sibu district, the late Datuk Paduka Sharifah Rehanah Tuanku Razali in Kampung Dato Lama Road.

The branch moved to the PBB building at Bandong Road in 1992 and stayed there until 2002.

After that, it moved to the Government Residential House at Awang Ramli Amit Road here.

Since 2014, the branch had been operating at the Sibu Islamic Complex.
