MALUDAM: An allocation of RM50 million under the Betong Development Agency (BDDA) will be used to implement four high-impact projects in Maludam and Triso.

Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor said two of these projects aim to address the issue of flooding, which has been adversely affecting agricultural activities of the residents.

“In light of this, starting next year (until 2026), the Sarawak government will develop flood mitigation projects and the construction of drainage and irrigation systems in villages in Maludam and Triso,” she said.

She made these remarks during the Joint Meeting of Community and Village Chiefs (KMKK) in Maludam and Triso at the Maludam Sub-District Office yesterday.

She explained that the government’s efforts to enhance agricultural infrastructure are due to the significant potential for agriculture in the Maludam/Triso area.

“Meaning, behind this is our focus on improving the socio-economic status of the community through fertile land for agriculture. This, in turn, reduces the distress of the population during the monsoon season, which has historically led to many settlements being inundated,” she said.

Dayang added that two more projects include the Construction of Cultural Square and Phase One of the Rest and Recreation (RnR) Area.

During the same meeting, discussions were held regarding the planning of celebrations throughout 2024.

“We discussed Ramadan, Aidilfitri, Aidiladha, and the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday. The Maludam Sub-District will host the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday at the Betong Division level.

“For the pre-Gawai celebration, it will be held at the Longhouse Sungai Suak, while Ngiling Tikai will take place at the Longhouse Sungai Mulon.

“Other discussions revolved around the People’s Sports Carnival and the Maludam Explore Race Edition 2024 by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC),” she added.

Various other issues were raised, including the need to rebuild the Seberang Village Bridge, proposals to address road shoulder erosion in Seberang Village, the pending voting for the status of the Hilir Village/Sungai Suak Bridge, solar light theft issues, the establishment of committees for Christian and Baha’i religious cemetery lands, the need for new lots for Islamic cemetery sites, and proposals to upgrade the football field and requests for the construction of a sports complex in the Maludam Village Expansion Scheme (SPK).
