SIBU: A foreigner was found dead in a rented room of a shophouse in Jalan Tinggi here yesterday (May 25).
Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the landlord found the deceased identified as Syarif Effendi, 48, from Indonesia, hanging around 3.30pm.
“The landlord had wanted to collect the monthly rental from the man, who is believed to be staying alone in the room, on the second floor of the building.
“When no one answered the door, the landlord opened the door and found the body hanging by a bag strap,” he said.
He said police do not suspect foul play. Except for the strangulation marks on the neck there were no signs of struggle or injuries on the body.
The man is believed to have died about 10 hours before he was discovered by the landlord.
Stanley said the Indonesian consulate in Kuching has been notified for further action.
The case is classified as sudden death.
