Firefighters recover deceased body under jetty

SIBU: The body of Jamwal Akash, a 23-year-old Indian national who fell into Sungai Batang Igan from a ship at Gimhawk Shipyard on Sungai Maaw road, was recovered near the Boh Ming Breeding Farm jetty today (April 13).

The Sibu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that police received a distress call at 8.50 am about a body floating near the jetty.

“A search operation was promptly initiated using multiple boats, leading to the discovery of the deceased under the jetty at about 9:15 am, roughly 5 km downstream from where the incident originally occurred.

“The deceased was then transported to Simpang 3 here for further investigation by the police,” said Bomba.

Search and rescue operations concluded at 10 am.

On April 11, around 10 am, Akash reportedly fell from the ship and Bomba was alerted at 3.02 pm that day. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing the fall and saw Akash struggling in the water approximately 30 metres from the ship. It is unclear what clothing Akash was wearing at the time, but he is noted to have had a tattoo on the left side of his neck bearing the word ‘patience’.
