Four nabbed for assaulting deputy minister

KUCHING: Police have arrested four local men who allegedly assaulted a Sarawak Deputy Minister in the Tabuan Jaya area last Tuesday (May 30).

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri in a statement, said the suspects aged between 23 and 32, were picked up at different locations early this morning (June 4).

They were arrested around Tabuan Hilir, Semariang, Petra Jaya and Jalan Simpang Tiga.

Also confiscated was a white Volkswagen car at Taman Sukma, Jalan Sultan Tengah, which is believed to have been used by the suspects during the incident.

“Background checks found that all of them, who were tested positive for syabu and marijuana, had prior records related to crime and drug offences.

“The suspects’ remand was approved by the Magistrate’s Court for four days until June 8 to facilitate investigations,” Mohd Azman said.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 and Section 323 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt.

Offences under Section 506 carry a maximum two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both. Whereas, under Section 323, offenders can be sentenced to a maximum of one year imprisonment, or fined up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.

Mohd Azman said the investigation papers will be referred to the Attorney General’s Chamber for further instructions.

On the day of the incident, the victim in his police report, had alleged that he came across four men acting suspiciously at a residential area in Tabuan Jaya around 9.05pm.

The victim then approached the suspects to speak with them, however, one of them was displeased with the admonishment and allegedly attacked the deputy minister, resulting in injuries such as scratches and pain on the back of the victim’s body.
