KUCHING: In the midst of the ongoing rabies outbreak, the state government will carry out free house-to-house vaccination of dogs at Taman Sepakat Flats in Demak Laut here.

Set to begin next Monday, the measure was announced by Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian when he handed over strata titles to 28 flat owners who gathered at Taman Sepakat mosque yesterday.

According to Sim, the government has been strengthening its efforts in curbing rabies by consolidating and mobilising vaccination campaigns across the state.

Citing Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah’s call to dog owners to be responsible, Sim said it is vital to contain dogs within house compounds so that they would not be targeted as stray dogs by the authorities.

“Dog owners must take care of their dogs – be responsible for them. If they roam around outside of their owner’s house, they will be automatically considered stray dogs,” he said.

“We hope dog owners are aware of the consequences of rabies outbreak. Of course, we all love dogs, but we must realise that the disease not only kill dogs and cats but also humans.

“As much as we love dogs, we should love humans more. Therefore, I urge everyone to register their dogs in order to help the authorities keep track of them.”

It is reported that the effectiveness of the vaccination can only be measured after 28 days.
