SIBU: A total of 272 children from 22 longhouses in the Nangka constituency will benefit from the Laman Ilmu Rumah Panjang DUN Nangka programme.

Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Dr Annuar Rapaee said the programmed was initiated to help students who were left behind in their studies due to the ineffectiveness of the home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) approach during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As a result of COVID, we found out that some students still lagged behind in lessons due to the ineffectiveness of the PDPR approach.

“It is common knowledge that it is not only the issue of internet connectivity but also the issue of care, and the issue of monitoring the students,” he said when met by reporters after the launching ceremony of the programme at Rumah Maxwell, Batu 13 Jalan Oya yesterday (June 9).

Through the programme, longhouse students in Nangka will enjoy free tuition four times a week for two hours from 7 pm to 9 pm.

“They will be given a proper study place and teachers to guide them. The students must go to the place of study. They will gather and a teacher will monitor and guide them,” he added.

He hoped the students’ parents would also take the matter seriously and ensure that their children attended the programme.

Dr Annuar advised parents to spend at least half an hour on their children’s progress.

He assured that his party, PBB, was committed to ensuring the success of the programme by helping out with the books and facilities.

He also took the opportunity to deliver food baskets to the residents and aid to nine residents aged 70 and above from Rumah Maxwell in conjunction with the Gawai celebration.
