KUCHING: A gastronomy skill centre is growing and expanding in Kota Samarahan, said Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos.

“Called the Kuching Skill Centre, it is now training 150 youngsters on how to cook well, how to prepare best food and drinks, how to do catering and how to create new and best dishes and drinks,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

He added that all the graduates from the centre are snapped up by local hotels and cafes for jobs.

Minos added that the owner and operator of the centre, Novert Sullang had disclosed that their graduates are “well demanded” in the job market.

“MPKS welcomes the centre. It adds to Kota Samarahan as “kota ilmu” with Unimas (Universiti Malaysia Sarawak) and the UiTM (Universiti Teknologi Mara) around.

“Now we have skill centres for teachers’ training, construction and building and now, gastronomy. There is a talk of a beauty centre for grooming and beautifying the ladies,” he said.

“Hopefully there will be skill centres for the new industries like oil and gas, hydrogen, green technology, water, oil palm, etc. They are badly needed and demanded.

“I say giving real skills and expertise to our young people is a very good and commendable move. Jobs are readily available for them. So MPKS welcomes and supports them where and when possible,” he added.
