BERLIN: Dressed only in a bathrobe from a sauna, a mobile phone thief tried in vain to escape from police in the town of Hamm in the western German state of North Rhine Westphalia, reported German news agency (dpa).

The 37-year-old suspect was in a spa and wellness facility on Monday, although it was only open to women that day, according to the police.

A 24-year-old woman reported her bathrobe and mobile phone stolen from the clothes rack while she was in the sauna.

Staff at the spa noticed the suspect and tried to detain him. However, he fled nearly naked across the sauna grounds and climbed over a fence. He continued, clad only in a bathrobe, across a road to nearby wetlands.

There, the man tried to hide in the bushes.

However, police officers spotted him and arrested him. The woman’s mobile phone was found in the 37-year-old’s rucksack.

According to the police, the man, who is known to them, is now being investigated for theft, trespassing and causing a public nuisance. – BERNAMA-dpa
