KUCHING: The owner, employees and a number of patrons of a gym located at Jalan Wan Alwi, here were compounded RM32,000 in total for standard operating procedure (SOP) violation.

Kuching district acting police chief Supt Merbin Lisa in a statement today (May 27), said conditional movement control order (CMCO) SOP surveillance work carried out by authorities at around 1.45pm in Jalan Wan Alwi found that the gym is operating as usual for customers.

“The police who were patrolling and monitoring had inspected the premises and found that there were 12 individuals exercising at the centre and the premise was found to have failed to close its business as outlined by the government.

“Accordingly, a total of 12 compounds were issued, one against the gym owner and 11 compounds for other individuals, including customers and employees consisting of 10 men and two women aged between 21 and 50 years old.

“All compounded persons were found to have committed offenses under Regulation 17 (1) PPPPB (No.4) 2021,” he said.

Merbin noted that the owner of the gym was issued a compound of RM10,000 while the rest were fined RM2,000 each, adding that the compound must be paid within 14 days from the date the compound is issued at the local District Health Office.

He also stressed that the people should not be complacent in view of the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the state.

“Repeated warnings have been given by the police through the mass media regarding compliance with CMCO SOPs. Nevertheless, there are still business premises and individuals out there still ignoring this matter so much so that the police have no choice but to issue compounds to the individuals involved.

“With the latest cases being reported around Kuching district, the public should stand and work together with the state government to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission,” he advised.

Recently, the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) had decided that all sports activities for training and tournament purposes are not allowed as part of its revised SOPs.
