KUCHING: The Health Department is constantly monitoring Covid-19 cases and taking precautionary measures.

Director Dr Ooi Choo Huck reminded Sarawakians to not be complacent and to take preventive measures at all times.

Dr Ooi noted that there was an increase in cases in Sarawak during Epidemiological (Epid) Week 29 with 437 cases reported compared to 367 cases during Epid Week 28.

“As of July 26, a total of 57,008 cases have been reported, taking the cumulative cases in Sarawak to 309,308 cases.

“However, most new reported cases are in categories 1 and 2 and do not require hospitalisation,” he said on Tuesday (July 26).

According to Dr Ooi, the rate of ICU bed utilisation was still at a satisfactory level of 2.9 per cent from the total number of ICU beds as of July 24.

He added that the number of Covid-19 related deaths in Sarawak also showed an increase, with a total of eight deaths from July 1-25, compared to only three for the month of June.

Dr Ooi also reminded the public to always wear a face mask, especially inside premises as well as in crowded areas; maintain physical distancing at all times; carry out self-screening or at a health facility if necessary when experiencing symptoms and go to any nearest health facility should there be warning signs; high-risk individuals such as the elderly, frontline workers or individuals with comorbidities are encouraged to get a second booster dose after six months of receiving the first.

Among the preventive measures taken by the department include; all government health facilities in Sarawak are ready to provide treatment and assistance to the public at all times; ensuring Quarantine and Treatment Centres for those at low risk for Covid-19 in all divisions to be activated; providing Paxlovid for high-risk individuals with severe Covid-19 infection at Covid-19 Assessment Centre (CAC) in health clinics and elected government hospitals.

The list of CACs in health clinics and hospitals offering Paxlovid will be updated at https://covid19.moh.gov.my/ from time to time.
